Naira strengthens against dollar
The Naira on Wednesday appreciated against the dollar at the parallel market, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports.
The Nigerian currency on Wednesday afternoon gained 5 points to exchange at N390 to the dollar, from N395 it traded on Tuesday, representing an appreciation of 1.01 per cent.
The naira also hedged against the Pound Sterling and the Euro as it traded at N500 and N420, from N510 and N426 it posted on Tuesday.
At the Bureau De Change segment of the market, the naira hedged against the dollar, the Pound Sterling and the Euro as it closed at N490, N500 and N420 respectively, from N495, N510 and N426 posted on Tuesday.
The naira extended gains at the official interbank market as it closed at N317 to the dollar, from N320.25 it posted on Tuesday. Currency traders expressed optimism that the intervention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) at the Forex market would translate to a steady recovery of the naira.

Over 30 cows drown; farmlands, bridges destroyed as flood wrecks havoc in Plateau community
Sequel to heavy downpour in Jos East Local Government Area of Plateau State, Tuesday night, over 30 cows were drowned, farmlands destroyed and bridges/roads linking many communities with Council headquarters were damaged.
Reacting to the incident, Member representing Jos East Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Joshua Madaki, in a chat with journalists in Jos on Wednesday, said that the heavy downpour, which lasted several hours, wrecked havoc by disconnecting the Council Secretariat from the people.
Madaki said, the incident has forced residents of the council to go through Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, before they can reach the Local Government headquarters.
He appealed to the Plateau State Government and well spirited individuals to come to the rescue of affected communities by providing relief materials and to reconstruct the damaged bridges to enable the farmers move their harvest to the markets.

Man puts pepper in 10-year-old daughter’s private part in Lagos
A 37-year-old father, Okoro Odia, was Wednesday dragged before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court sitting in Lagos State for putting ground pepper on his 10-year-old daughter’s private part.
The police prosecutor, Ihiehie Lucky, told the court that the accused committed the alleged offence sometime in June and again in August.
Ihiehie said Okoro, who is standing trial on a three-count of indecent treatment, attempted to commit murder and assault, unlawfully and indecently dealt with his daughter.
The prosecutor said, “The complainant told the police that Okoro, a furniture maker, had sometime in June used a dog chain to tie the girl to a ceiling fan and left her there.
“The accused tied the daughter to the ceiling because she failed to submit his lotto number to an agent. The indecent assault on the girl was reported by the step-mother, Abayomi Maria, to the Ketu Police Station.
“Maria told the police that on August 8 at about 8:00 p.m. Okoro called his daughter to bring her report sheet. When he saw that she failed, he indecently punished her. He told her to lie down and he put the dry pepper inside her private part, in her eyes and all over her body.
“Her screams alerted the step-mother who tried to stop him but he beat her up,” Ihiehie said, adding that the offences contravened sections 135, 228(1) and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

New militant group fulfils threat, blows up pipeline in Delta
Barely 24 hours after it threatened to bomb oil installations in the Niger Delta region if the Federal Government did not stop its one-sided talks with the Ijaw ethnic nationality, the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate, NDJM, Wednesday, blew up a major trunk delivery line in Delta state. The trunk line conveying crude from Isoko to the Eriemu manifold Urhobo nationality belong to NPDC and Shoreline Resources. NDJM in a statement, last night, by the spokesperson, self-styled General Aldo Agbalaja, said the Central Operational Command of the group has approved the commencement of demolition and evacuation of uplands tagged ‘Operation Zero’ to correct the wrongs that have afflicted our people for years.
The group had, Tuesday, warned the federal government to stop parleying with the Ijaw ethnic nationality alone, as it was not the only tribe in the region that its militants could blow pipelines.
It said it was out to “seek justice for the perpetually cheated and protect the identities of our people, who are co-owners of the wealth, which Nigeria has forever misappropriated.”
Vanguard could not confirm the authenticity of the claim, last night, from industry sources.
However, the group said: “As a mark of our seriousness and to prove we are people of our words, at about 02.00hours of today; Wednesday, August 10, 2016, operatives of the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate brought down a major trunk delivery line from Isoko to the Eriemu Manifold in Urhobo, belonging to the NPDC/Shoreline Resources” “We would also want to use this medium to give a very strong warning to the operatives of the asset NPDC/Shorelines not to commence repairs pending when they get signals from us, otherwise the inevitable may occur to their personnel, as we have earlier warned them to begin evacuating the uplands,” it said.
Its words: “This is just a glimpse of what is to come, there are several assets already penned down for destruction. This line of action has been made inevitable by an unjust system, which only responds to the violent to the detriment of the peaceful and law abiding.”

El-Rufai blasts CBN’s monetary policies
Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State, on Wednesday, decried the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN’s prevailing fiscal regime, saying the bank’s 14 percent monetary policy rate had led to massive job losses in the country. Gov. Nasir-El-Rufai El-Rufai said the CBN risked losing its power to set lending rates for commercial banks unless it immediately addressed the situation, contending that only unscrupulous elements could successfully operate under the current fiscal policy atmosphere. The governor, who spoke at a special roundtable organised by Women in Business, a non-profit women advocacy organisation, in Abuja, said: “We have a Central Bank that has an MPR at —what? — 14 percent and banks lending at 20 percent. “Only traders and drug dealers can make money at this interest rate. I have said it before and I will repeat it again, unless the Central Bank and the banking system make a conscious decision to bring interest rate down, one day we would legislate it.”
He dismissed CBN’s reasons for high interest rate, and used the ‘B’ word to express his disgust. According to him, “the rate of inflation in the UK is not two percent or one percent. It is seven to eight. But lending rate is at one percent. I think they cut the interest rate last week. “All these theories that the rate of interest must be above the rate of inflation is economic (expletive). “We must decide that businesses should be able to borrow at an interest rate that makes sense and politically lower rates to that level.” The roundtable attracted professionals from all walks of life and the participants used the platform to share ideas and express challenges faced in running a successful enterprise.
Lagos completes Berger pedestrian bridge
The Governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led Lagos State Government, on Wednesday, completed a Pedestrian Bridge at Berger bus stop, along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, even as it was immediately put to use for Lagosians.
The Head of the Peoples Democratic Party’s reconciliation committee, Prof. Jerry Gana, on Tuesday said Nigerians are yearning and crying for the return of the party into power.
The PDP relinquished power at the federal level in 2015 when it lost to the All Progressive Congress after 16 years of dominance in the country’s presidential elections. Since the lost, the party has been embroiled in different turmoils, the most recent being the face off between Senator Ahmed Makarfi and Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, who are engaged in a legal battle over the leadership of the party.
In a bid to resolve the crisis, the PDP Board of Trustees, led by Senator Walid Jibrin, inaugurated an 18-man reconciliation committee to unite party stalwarts.
Speaking after a meeting with Sheriff, Gana said the committee had taken note of the problems causing disaffection within the party.
He said, “We are here to find out together how PDP can be solid, firm, cohesive and triumphant.
“This is because Nigerians are waiting for PDP, they are missing the PDP, they are crying and yearning for PDP because the 16 years of democracy cannot be wasted away.
“We are here not as a panel, not as a court, not even as an appeal committee but from the BoT as heirs of the family.
“In a family there must be sometimes problems here and there but there must be re-consolidation. Where there are elders people say things don’t go wrong.
“The purpose of our being here is for this party to be strong again and be reunited.
“We are delighted that there have been clear resolutions on the determination and the desire that the problems be resolved, unity be re-established and for PDP to move forward.”
U.S. donates an additional $37 million to assist Northeast Nigeria
Following a trip to Maiduguri at the center of the Boko Haram insurgency this week, USAID’s Office for Foreign Disaster Assistance Director Jeremy Konyndyk announced $37 million in new funding to support additional humanitarian assistance for people affected by the conflict and severe food insecurity in Nigeria and throughout the Lake Chad Basin.
At a press conference Wednesday, August 10, at the Nigerian Emergency Management Agency, Konyndyk said the funding for assistance implemented by international NGOs and UN agencies brings the total USAID humanitarian support for the region to $318 million since last year. The United States is the single largest humanitarian donor to the region.
"The United States is committed to supporting Nigeria to ease this humanitarian crisis,” Konyndyk said, and help sustain this vulnerable population until they can resume livelihoods upended by conflict.
Despite gradually improving security conditions, the humanitarian situation remains dire. Throughout the region, approximately 5 million people need emergency food assistance and 2.5 million people are displaced.

15 inmates escape in Nsukka jailbreak
15 inmates in the Nsukka Prison in Enugu state have escaped after breaking their cells and scaling the prison walls. This incident happened yesterday night August 9th. The controller of prison, Lawrence Okonkwo, who confirmed the jailbreak, said he is yet to get more information about the jailbreak from the Enugu state prisons controller, Isaiah Amariri. Meanwhile there are reports that two of the escaped inmates have been re-arrested.
