We have no clothes to protect us from cold – Nigerian athletes
As the track and field events of the Rio 2016 Olympics begin today, Nigerian athletes have cried out about lack of equipment and proper clothing to weather the storm. Solomon Dalung and some Nigerian athletes at Rio 2016 Olympics Photo Funke-Oshonaike Over all Nigerian athletes have poor dressers at the Games. And as driving rains and cold winds sweep through Rio athletes who are competing outdoors need to protect themselves, but not so for the Nigerian athletes. “It has been raining, windy and cold in Rio. And we have no kits for the athletes and coaches,”cried one of the athletes during warm-up on Thursday. “I don’t know why things are just like this with our country,” he added. However, he was hopeful that they will still give their best just for the love of the sport. And it remain to be seen how they will cope as the rush for medals begin in earnest. From all indication competition will be fierce. Nigeria’s medal prospects will begin with Uhunoma Naomi Osazuwa competing in the heptathlon, Chinwe Okoro will seek qualification in the women shot put, while Blessing Okagbare will later run in the women 100m heats.

We are elected to pad budget - Lawmaker
As the controversy surrounding the alleged padding of the 2016 budget continues, a member of the
House of Representatives and Chairman House Committee on Legislative Compliance, Abiodun Olasupo, says they were elected to pad the budget as it is their constitutional responsibility to pad the budget. According to the Nation, Olasupo said this while inspecting some projects within his constituency in Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State yesterday August 10th.
"If you look at the Nigeria Constitution, what Honourable AbdulMuminin Jibrin refer to as padding is tantamount to what the constitution defines as the function of a member of House of Representative because the constitution guarantees the three major function of making law, appropriation, and over sight. In appropriation it is either for us to add, subtract or change and what Hon Jibrin has been trying to say is that we are changing, inserting and adding, so if that is what he calls padding then that is what the constitution expects the house of representative to do. In my own opinion been an active member during the budget defence, I was involved in the budgeting system of up to six ministries, I participated in FERMA, NAVY, health institutions, governmental agencies and a whole lot of them. The entire budgeting system make it possible that if you are elected as a member of national assembly and you are not ready to do what Muminin Jibrin calls padding then you are a failure, because basically the budget that is been brought to the national assembly does not reflect the principle of federal character as guaranteed by the constitution” he said

Bodyguards protest exclusion from Buhari’s govt

About 16 months after the 2015 Presidential elections, bodyguards of President Muhammadu Buhari who participated during the campaigns on Thursday protested against their “exclusion” by those they described “cabals in the government.”

They said the only reward they got for their efforts during the campaigns was the N20,000 paid to them in January and February 2015.

They alleged that “some cabals have hijacked the President”, adding that many of the key actors in Buhari’s government, who did not work for him, have denied them access to him.
Speaking at a press briefing addressed by their spokesperson, Badiru Olabiyi Balogun and three other members, Audu Odemeho, Kasim Abdullahi Hassan and Zubairu Idris, the group warned that their marginalisation constitutes security threat to the nation.
“Right now, we need Mr. President to appreciate our hard work for him. We need Mr. President to recognise the fact that we have lost everything because we championed the change agenda.1
“Definitely, it is not just our exclusion that is a security threat to the country. Anything that would deny any man his dues and legitimate rights can be concluded to mean a security threat because when you don’t get your dues and what is rightly due for you, then you are opened to a lot of temptations.2 So, we are indeed a security threat”, Balogun stated.

Nigeria has become poor – Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said Nigeria has suddenly become a poor country as a result of the sharp drop in price of oil.
He however said the prudent manner his administration had been handling the nation’s resources had made it impossible for people to know that there is severe shortage in the country.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President spoke while receiving the United Nations Population Fund’s Executive Director and Under Secretary-General of the United Nations, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said commitment to transparency and accountability was serving the government in good stead, despite severe shortage of resources in the country.
“It has been a very difficult year for Nigeria. Before we came to office, petroleum sold for about $100 per barrel. Then it crashed to $37, and now oscillates between $40 and $45 per barrel.
“Suddenly, we’re a poor country, but commitment to transparency and accountability is not making people know that there is severe shortage,” the President said.
Asking UNFPA to bear with Nigeria in whichever area the country could not live up to its responsibilities for now, Buhari said exploding population and different cultural practices in the country provide fertile ground for research to organisations like UNFPA.
