Today, the filmmaker and actor reposted a video of Mark Zuckerberg’s visit to Nigeria. The video was a compilation of Zuckerberg’s tour of Afrinolly studios and his subsequent meeting with some of Nigeria’s major artistes.
“Hey everyone, we are about to go check out Nollywood which is Nigeria’s film and media,” Zuckerberg said in one scene where he noted that Nollywood is ‘huge’ and the second largest film industry in the world.
The Facebook boss was then given a tour of Afrinolly studio by the production manager, Chike Maduegbuna. “Let me introduce you to some of my team mates,” Maduegbuna said as they walked into the production area.
In a different scene shot the same day, Maduegbuna and Zuckerberg walk into a different hall bubbling with people. “Here we have all the major artistes…” the production manager says here.
Zuckerberg is later seen, addressing the top artistes which include singers like Yemi Alade, comedian Basketmouth, disc jockey DJ Cuppy, filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, and more.
While many Nigerians applaud Zuckerberg for promoting Nigeria’s different creative industries with that video, Femi Branch thinks it is ‘idiotic.’
His irritation? That all the artistes featured in the clip were introduced as Nollywood’s major artistes.
He said:
“Was really pissed off at the way we misrepresent ourselves to foreigners sometimes. Imagine this fellow saying “Here we have all the major Artistes”????? Seriously?!?! These are all the major stars in Nollywood?!?! And are Yemi Alade, Chidinma, Basketmouth and Co Nollywood Artistes?!?! This is really idiotic to say the least!!!“
Meanwhile, folks are reacting to Mr Branch’s post. Check out the exchange:
