EFCC returns seized 48 houses belonging to former Bayelsa state governor, Timipre Sylva
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has returned 48 houses seized from former Bayelsa state governor, Timipre Sylva. The antigraft agency during the Jonathan administration in 2013, had dragged Sylva before a Federal high court over allegations of misappropriation of N6.46 billion state funds when he was governor of the state between 2009 and 2012. His assets were subsequently seized during his trial.
Among properties seized and have been returned are a mansion at 3 River Niger Street, plot 3192 Cadastral zone AO, Maitama District Abuja; nine units (comprising six one bedroom and 3 two bedroom apartments) at 8 Sefadu Street Wuse zone 2, plot 262 Cadastral zone AO2, Wuse Abuja; and 2 units duplexes at 5 Oguta Street, plot 906 Cadastral zone Wuse 11 Abuja.
Others are: a duplex at Plot 1271 Nike Street Cadastral zone AO5, Maitama District Abuja; a duplex at Phase 1 Unit No. 1 (Villa 1) Palm Springs Gold Estate, Cachez Turkey Projects Limited, Mpape, Abuja; 10 units of one-room apartments at 8 Mistrata Street plot 232 Cadastral zone Wuse 11 Abuja; 5 units duplexes at Plot No 1070 Dakibiyu District Cadastral zone B10, Abuja; 16 units service apartments at Plot 1181 Thaba Tseka Crescent, Off IBB Way, Wuse 11, Abuja and 3 units of three- bedroom flats at No. 1 Mubi Close, Plot 766. Suicide bomber kills 14 at wedding party
A suicide bomber killed at least 14 people on Monday in an attack targeting a wedding party in the northeastern province of Hasakeh, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
“A suicide bomber blew himself up inside a hall in Tall Tawil village during the wedding of a member of the Syrian Democratic Forces, killing at least 14 people and wounding dozens more,” Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.
The SDF is an Arab-Kurdish coalition battling jihadists of the Islamic State group in northern Syria.

Two injured as fire guts shopping mall in Lagos
TWO people, yesterday, sustained varying degrees of injuries when a shopping complex was gutted by fire at Odo-Eran in Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State. 11 shops and property worth several millions of naira were destroyed in the inferno, which began at about 2.36 pm from a store stocked with chemical for paint production.
It was learned that efforts of the Lagos State Emergency Response Team, which include Lagos State Fire Service, State Emergency management Agency, LASEMA and officials from Wahum Industries Limited, prevented the spread of the fire to other adjoining buildings. Confirming the number of shops razed, director of the State fire service, Rasak Fadipe and General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Mr Adesina Tiamiyu, lamented that the chemical items were inappropriately stored within the premises. Tiamiyu disclosed that 11 shops were razed by the inferno and two adult male sustained injuries but prompt efforts of the team helped salvage 10 shops. He said: “From our preliminary investigation, it was revealed that the fire started from one of the shops within the premises. Further investigation revealed that chemical items used for manufacturing paint were inappropriately stored as this came in contact with other inflammable items leading to the fire outbreak.”
He, however, advised shop owners and companies involved in chemical storage and other inflammable materials to often adopt daily precautionary measures.

88-year-old woman nabbed for purchasing 6-year-old girl for N500,000
An 88-year old woman, identified only as Loveth, has been arrested by operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP in Edo State for allegedly abducting and selling a 6-year old girl, simply identified as Success.
The spokesman for Edo State, Mr. Nduka Nwanwene, who confirmed the incident to newsmen at the weekend, said the victim was allegedly kidnapped around Upper Sakponba in September, in Oredo Local Government Area of the state and trafficked to Onitsha, Anambra State, where the suspect purchased her for over N500,000.
Nwanwene said, “The girl was trafficked to Onitsha into an orphanage home, where an 88-year-old woman from Asaba in Delta State, purchased her for N500, 000.
“She was then taken to Asaba. But Success was said to have recalled her father’s telephone number and called him through her abductor’s mobile phone (unknown to the suspect), to inform him of her ordeal.
“Her father, a bricklayer, then called the attention of NAPTIP.
“The suspect was arrested on Saturday and would soon be arraigned to face trial after investigations.
“We are still trying to track some other persons connected with this, because we understand that the man that actually started the whole thing has relocated from that neighbourhood.”
Nwawene decried the prevalence of trafficking in the country.
He, however, called on parents to remain watchful and monitor the movement of their little children and wards, adding that the victim had been rescued and was currently under the shelter of the agency.
We didn’t sack 1,500 workers, says MTN
MTN Nigeria, Monday denied sacking some of its contract staff as reported in some national dailies recently. Some newspaper and online publications alleged that MTN Nigeria had laid off some of its contract staff, particularly those that work at the telecommunications call centres.
The reports claimed that many of the contract staff were given their disengagement letters Wednesday.
The reports also claimed that some of MTN workers in Apapa branch, had their salaries reduced from N120,000 to N40,000 a month and were asked to continue working at their Ibadan office, if they were still interested in the job. However, in a reaction, MTN said the reports were untrue.
Responding to the reports, MTN Executive, Amina Oyagbola, said; “The reports are incorrect. The second phase of a change-in-vendor process took place last week, offering interested workers the opportunity to join the new call centres owned and operated by the vendor; ISON BPO. MTN signed an outsourcing contract with ISON BPO Limited in 2015, following a competitive bid process. Indeed, MTN’s call centre operations were outsourced to independent third party agencies since 2008, as part of continued efforts to improve the efficiency and quality of customer service delivery in MTN.
Melaye advocates presidential pardon for treasury looters
Senator Dino Melaye has advised President Buhari to give presidential pardon and amnesty to treasury looters. Dino gave the advise in a statement he released yesterday Sunday September 2nd.
In the statement Dino proferred that looters should be given six months to return public funds or face the full wrath of the law.
"Though an unrepentant advocate for integrity and forthrightness especially from public office holders, l however sincerely want to recommend that Mr. President grant Presidential Amnesty/Pardon to all those who looted our treasury provided they return all proceeds of their loot to the government within six (6) months of the declaration of the Amnesty.
This, I believe will encourage the voluntary return of the looted funds, empower the government financially to immediately commence the implementation of projects and programmes that will stimulate the economy and raise the peoples' standard of living, and save the judiciary and other law enforcement agencies the agony of fruitlessly pursuing the looters in and out of the courtrooms. In the long run, this would be a win-win situation for both the government and people of Nigeria. At the expiration of the six months' 'Moratorium', all those who failed to comply would then be made to face the reality of aggressive and expeditious prosecution and eventual jail terms for convicts in accordance with the laws of the land", he said.In the statement, Dino also recommended the removal of 'His Excellency and Distinguished' from the names of President, Vice president, Governors and Senators respectively.
" In this regard, I recommend that henceforth no President, Vice President, Governor, or Deputy Governor should answer the name 'His Excellency' until the material condition of ordinary Nigerians has also become 'Excellent'. No Senator should continue to answer 'Distinguished' until the the masses of the people begin to experience a distinguished existence and no Federal or state Legislator should wear the badge of 'Honourable Member' until the ordinary citizen is himself living a life that can be classified Honourable in every material particular"the statement read.
