Former Abia state governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, defects to APC
Former Abia state governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, has defected to APC. In a statement released today, Kalu announced his resignation from his former party, Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), which he founded.
He is pictured above at APC secretariat in Abuja with the party's National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun and others.
Nigeria ranks No 1 in internet usage in Africa
With 63 million internet users in Nigeria, the country has been ranked number one in Africa and eight in the world in terms of internet usage.
This was contained in the second edition of digitalfacts – Nigeria, West & Central Africa; a publication produced by digitXplus. The book stated that the following fifteen countries have the highest number of internet users in the world: China (632 million); USA (269 m); India (198m); Japan (110m); Brazil (105m); Russia (87m); Indonesia (83m); and Germany (68m). Others are: Nigeria (63m); UK (57m); France (54m); Mexico (52m); Iran (49m); Egypt (43m) and South Korea (42m).
The publication revealed that since 2011, Nigeria has maintained a steady upward trend in the number of internet users. It stated that from 35.7 million, the figure increased to 42.8 million; 51.8m; 57.7m and 63.2m internet users in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015; respectively.
Digitalfacts puts the total number of internet users worldwide at 3.2 billion as at December 2015; representing a whopping increase of 8.9% over 2.9 billion internet users recorded at the end of 2014. Based on the regional statistics contained in the publication, Asia-Pacific had 1.6 billion internet users as at December 2015; while North America, Latin America, Western Europe, Central/Eastern Europe and Middle East/Africa boasted of 288 million; 325 million; 310 million; 238 million; and 429 million; in that order.
The book further made public that the Nigerian telecom sector, one of the largest in Africa, is driven almost completely by mobile telephony. “Rapid expansion of the wireless networks and competition has driven down voice tariffs and made basic cellular services affordable, especially for the poorer rural consumers,” digitalfacts stated. It also acknowledged that the relatively affluent urban middle classes increasingly enjoy 3G and 4G LTE services; adding that consumers face issues pertaining to service quality and network congestion while religious extremism in the north of the country has affected infrastructure investments.
Boko Haram suspects protected me in prison – Fani-Kayode
A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, says he was protected by Boko Haram suspects during his four-day detention at Kuje Prison.
Fani-Kayode said this in an article titled, ‘Head bloodied but not bowed and the ascension of President-Elect Donald Trump’ on Wednesday.
The ex-minister said he spent over two weeks in the underground cell of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission without being interrogated.
He said he was then transferred to Kuje Prison where he was kept in a cell along with terrorists.
Fani-Kayode said, “At Kuje I was kept in the terrorist wing of the prison which was built by the British government specifically for Boko Haram convicts and suspects. There were 47 of them in the facility and I was with them throughout. These were tough, disciplined, hardened, surprisingly well-educated and intimidating men.
“This was a frightful place and those that were locked up there were very dangerous and frightful people yet thankfully the Lord went ahead of me.
“The single cells, though small, were clean, well-ventilated, dry and very neat. The inmates were surprisingly very kind and friendly towards me and turned out to be my best friends and bodyguards whenever I toured the other parts of the prison.
“Most of those men were not Boko Haram killers but had been falsely accused, tortured and just dumped into prison and I felt nothing but pain and sorrow when I heard their stories.”
Fani-Kayode said during his time at the prison, he met with the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in detention for over a year.
He said they spoke for about three hours and they were protected by inmates during the meeting.
The ex-minister added, “When I went to visit the great and brilliant freedom fighter, Nnamdi Kanu, who is the leader of IPOB and easily the most courageous, powerful and credible Igbo leader in Nigeria today in his cell we had a very instructive and long discussion.
“I had never met Nnamdi before and I was amazed at his depth of knowledge, his immense courage and his deep convictions. There is no doubt in my mind that that man is going places and in him the Igbo have an Ojukwu and a Nnamdi Azikiwe all rolled into one. He is destined for greatness.
“My Boko Haram friends accompanied me to that meeting, drew a 10-man security cordon around me when we entered the general population of the prison and waited outside as Nnamdi and I spoke for almost three hours.”
ASUU strike: Senate intervention ends in deadlock
Efforts by the Senate leadership led by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to avert the one week warning strike already embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday met a brick wall, as the academics failed to shift ground.
Briefing National Assembly Correspondents shortly after a closed door meeting with the Senate leadership, the President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi confirmed that the union has not called off the strike; saying they will meet with their members before any decision can be arrived at.
However, he said that ASUU was ready to work with the senate and the federal government, in line with the mandate of the members of the union to resolve the strike, adding that ASUU does not enjoy embarking on strike except they are pushed to the wall.
Man kills friend’s seven-year-old son for money ritual in Nasarawa
The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested one Mr Emmanuel Ishaya of Ushata village for allegedly killing Isaac Joshua, his friend’s seven-year-old son, for ritual.
The Command’s Spokesman, DSP Idrissu Kenedy, on Wednesday said that the suspect was arrested following a report to the police by the father of the deceased, Joshua Ebini, on the disappearance of his son on Oct. 10.
He said that information from the suspect led to the arrest of three other suspects while a fourth accomplice to the alleged crime was still at large.
Kenedy said the suspects, during interrogation, confessed to the crime with each of them narrating his level of involvement.
He said that the prime suspect, Ishaya, confessed to have lured the boy away from the father’s house on a motorbike to a forest and killed him with a stick.
Ishaya confessed that he removed the seven-year-old boy’s genital and right buttock as requested by his collaborators.
The spokesman said investigation revealed that the whole ideal was muted by Aderogba Tunde
He said that Tunde made another suspect, Isah Ogah, to believe that his aged father in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, had the power to make money ritual provided they could provide some human parts.
He said, “Isah claimed not to be interested in taking human life in order to make money, but contacted Yohanna Ibaku, who brought Emmanuel Ishaya, the prime suspect, into the deal.”
He said the remains of the deceased were recovered from where they were dumped and buried by the family.
Kenedy said that the police was on the trail of the other suspects and that all the suspects would be prosecuted as soon as investigation was concluded on the matter.
Few days ago, a police officer attached to the Obi Division of Nasarawa State Command has been killed.
22, 000 cultists embrace Wike’s amnesty
Over twenty-two thousand members of different cult groups have embraced the amnesty offer of the Rivers state government.
This was made known in the report submitted by the Chairman of the amnesty Committee, Kenneth Chindah to Governor Nyesom Wike.
He said the committee observed that cultism is prevalent in the 23 Local government areas of the state.
Chinda said the Amnesty programmed has been yielding positive results, adding that victims of cult clashes are beginning to return to their various communities.
According to him, “The committee has done a great deal of work in assuring our repentant youths embrace the Amnesty of government.
“Investors who hitherto vacated their host communities are beginning to return to their base.
“Our findings show that there are cultists in the 23 Local government areas of the state with Iceland cult group with over 9,000 members.”
In the meantime, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has announced the disbandment of all armed vigilante groups operating in the state.
Wike made the announcement after receiving the report of the Rivers State Amnesty Committee at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The Governor directed security agencies to ensure that no vigilante committee exist in the state, except members of the group are profiled by the security agencies and approved by the State Government.
The Rivers State Governor also dismissed insinuations in some quarters that the State Amnesty programme was politically motivated.
He said the evidence of the Amnesty report has proved to critics that his administration was committed to fighting crime and criminality in the State.
Governor Wike further advised the repentant cultist and kidnappers that have denounced crime and criminality to desist from their wicked activities and live responsibly.

A Russian photographer, Vasiliy Gusev has died after he drove off a cliff in a bid to get a perfect photo of the moon.
Gusev who is popularly known by his fans as ‘Grigorich1777' travels all over Russia taking beautiful pictures. On the his last trip, he was so excited to take a perfect picture of the supermoon that he brought his 4-year-old and his friends with him on the trip.
He left his son and friends sleeping on in their tent and drove off in his car to search for the perfect shot of the moon. On his way back to their camp, while driving along a narrow track, he went over a 482ft cliff.
He was found alongside his wrecked car few hours later by his friends who raised alarm when they woke up and couldn't find him. He was still alive when he found but died on his way to the hospital.
He friends have organised a collection for his widow and two sons, who are five months old and four years old.
