EFCC arraigns former Air Vice Marshall Tony Omenyi for N136m fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, today arraigned Air Vice Marshall Tony Omenyi (rtd) pictured above, alongside his company, Huzee Nigerian Company, before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on a 3-count charge bordering on abuse of office and money laundering to the tune of N136.325.000.00 (one hundred and thirty six million, three hundred and twenty five thousand naira).

Omenyi is being charged for his alleged role in the diversion of funds meant for the purchase of arms by the military. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him. Upon his plea, counsel to EFCC, M. S. Abubakar, expressed his readiness, subject to the convenience of the court, to commenced trial immediately.

“My Lord, in view of the plea of the defendant and in the light of the provisions of Section 273, 300 (2) of the ACJA, I humbly apply to proceed immediately for trial”, Abubakar said.

Omenyi’s counsel, Wahab Olatunji, urged the court to dismiss the immediate commencement of trial claiming that, they had not been furnished with the statements of both the accused and the witnesses as recommended by the ‘Practice Direction Act, 2013’.
Olatunji’s motion was however overruled by the judge, who held that all the documents required by the ‘Practice Direction’ had already been furnished in three volumes in the charge filed and dated October 11, 2016 by the prosecution.
Olatunji further urged the court to admit his client to bail adding that the law presumed the accused innocent until otherwise proven guilty.
In response, Abubakar kicked, urging the court to refuse the application by the defence.
“My Lord, the punishment should not only be considered, the impact of the crime on the society should be considered too bearing in mind the fact that this case borders on the alleged diversion of funds for the purchase of arms by some members of the military. I urge the court to grant bail judiciously”, he submitted.
Justice Dimgba, after listening to the submissions of both counsels adjourned to November 14, 2016 for the hearing of the bail application and ordered the accused to be remanded in Kuje prison.

I almost died in prison – Edo Deputy Governor-elect

A member representing Etsako Federal Constituency and new deputy Governor of Edo State, Hon. Philip Shuaibu has recounted how members of the press saved his life in the days of Gani Fawehinmi.

“If not for you, I would not be living today. If not that you reported that one guy was also arrested and detained in Yaba, I would have been forgotten”, he said.

Philip who was addressing House of Reps Press Corp in Abuja, said Nigerian Journalists impressed it upon the government of the day, to release him from prison, when he was arrested alongside Late Gani Fawehinmi.

Narrating his ordeal in the hands of the Abacha led Military government, the new Edo deputy Governor said the military arrested some of them in connection to ‘Abacha Must Go’ protest in Lagos State and he was thrown to prison, alongside other prominent activists.

After some days, few of the protesters were released, living Philip and 7 others practically forgotten in prison, until the media fought for their release.

“While some young men were using their energy for ‘Youths Earnestly Ask for Abacha’, we were saying ‘Youths Earnestly Say Abacha Must Go’; in one of those incidences, I was arrested, detained and forgotten.
“All the big men that were arrested were released but they didn’t know we were in another cell within the same prison. They released the big names that they know and it was you, who made them realised that some people are out but I was not among them.

“A week later, we were all released. That is why I can never forget you. I will always remain with you because you saved my life. Truly, there are many of my type that are still there. Without you, nobody would remember them”, he explained.

US Election: Nnamdi Kanu writes open letter to Trump

Radio Biafra Director and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has written an open letter to the United States President-elect Donald Trump.

Kanu, who is currently in prison on the account of treason charges slammed against him by the Federal Government, urged Trup to fight for oppressed people of the world.

The letter, made available by IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, read in full:

Dear Mr. President-Elect

It is with great joy that I Nnamdi Kanu received the news of your election victory as the 45th President of the United States of America at the just concluded US Presidential election. On behalf of the Indigenous People of Biafra, please accept my warmest congratulations on your well deserved victory.

Mr. President, the American people have given you their mandate and trust, not only to make America Great Again, but also to bring positive changes in the affairs of humanity. Your victory has placed a historic and moral burden upon you to liberate enslaved nations in Africa, trapped in artificially created boundaries designed to reinforce colonial domination and subjugation.

Self-Determination is a sacred right of all people as demonstrated by the good people of United Kingdom when they opted out of the European Union. It is imperative to draw historical parallels between your victory and that of the great Dwight Eisenhower a fellow Republican, who was instrumental in the dismantling of European colonialism in Africa. I pray that you follow in his footsteps, by bringing to a deserved end neo-colonial enslavement, currently championed by puppet dictatorial and tyrannical regimes.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have every confidence that as the leader of the free world, you have both the capacity and the will to confront the challenges ahead and meet the expectations of the American people in particular and the oppressed people of the world in general.

Your victory has therefore come with the responsibility to unite and heal the wounds of the past, including the re-writing of some aspects of the dark history of American foreign policy in Africa, championed by established interests, who worked through successive US administrations to actively sponsor undemocratic rogue regimes, corrupt dictatorships and more recently unrepentant arch genocidists.

Such rulers, especially in Africa, remain a direct danger to world peace and security but more importantly a potent and subsisting threat to United States interests in Africa.

A Trump administration should resist every temptation, be it financial inducement to US politicians, political blackmail or otherwise, to partner with these tyrannical regimes in black Africa that specialise in ‘crushing’ the inalienable rights of its citizens, while using this as a cover to loot the treasury dry.

Tyranny is bad for mankind because history have always taught us that all great wars were started by tyrants. It is your responsibility Sir, as the leader of the free world, to hastily undo the mess that US Africa foreign policy has become under the Barack Obama administration.

The rights of distinct ethnic nationalities to seek self determination should be upheld. A free Biafra would be an ally of the United States of America on many fronts, as both nations share the same Judeo-Christian Greco-Roman value system with jealous disposition to safeguarding the rights of the individual.

May the Almighty God give you wisdom and protect you as you embark upon this historic service to humanity.
