The US State Department has announced that it has closed down a fake American embassy which issued thousands of illegal visas over the last 10 years in Ghana’s capital, Accra.

The unlikely building that holds this dubious ’embassy’ looks nothing like an actual consulate, was said to have been run by a syndicate of Ghanaian and Turkish nationals who charged $6,000 per visa.

The ‘visa office’ was said to open three times a week and had the portrait of American president Barack Obama on the wall – apparently to convince applicants that it was for real.

Reports have it that over 150 passports from different countries were recovered during the raid, and suspects are said to be at large.
