The House of Representatives yesterday approved the second reading of a bill seeking to impose N100,000 fine on anyone who abuses the country’s national flag.
Discussing the general principles of the bill at plenary, the sponsor, Sam Onuigbo (Abia-PDP) lamented the high rate of abuse which the national flag is being subjected to, and urged the House to do everything possible to preserve it.
When passed, he said the bill, which would amend the Flag and Coat of Arms Act 2004, would further make provisions to safeguard all the country’s national heritage.

800 houses destroyed, 40 hospitalized in Kebbi State
No fewer than 800 houses have been destroyed and almost 40 people injured with about 8 of them hospitalized with bone fractures, in the aftermath of rainstorm which wrecked havoc in some major parts of Maiyama Local Government area of Kebbi State.
The storm which was accompanied by heavy wind also destroyed electricity poles , transformers, water and schools facilities and this rendered several people in the area homeless as many of the victims affected by the disaster have sought refuge in their neighborhood within he community.
Discovered by a combined team of officials on assessment, they described the incident as a terrible experience as many people in the community have been affected.
Head, Nema Sokoto operations office, Mallam Suleiman Muhammad lamented that "about 800 houses were destroyed and slot of health, water, school and electricity facilities were completely damaged.
He also stated that means of livelihood like animals and properties severely affected following the rainstorm.

Court sentences Borno councillor to four years imprisonment for diverting 180 bags of rice meant for IDPs
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday secured the conviction of a Supervisory Councillor from Mafa Local Government Area, Umar Ibrahim and one Bulama Ali Zangebe, who were prosecuted before Justice F. Umaru of the State High Court Maiduguri on a 4-count charge bordering on conspiracy to sell and misappropriate the proceed of rice meant for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Mafa Local Government.
Ibrahim was arrested alongside Zangebe and Modu Bulama, for allegedly diverting 180 bags of rice donated by Danish Refugee Council (DRC), a Non Governmental Organization, for victims of insurgency in Mafa Local Government,

Federal Civil Servants Threaten Indefinite Strike
The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike to protest the non- payment of their N 200bn promotion and salaries and death benefits.
The National Executive Council of the ASCSN, which took the decision during its meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, also decided to picket the Ministry of Finance and the Budget Office, which the workers believed were subverting the express directives of the President to release funds to pay several arrears owed them.
The decision of the NEC of the ASCSN was read to journalists by the Federal Capital Territory Secretary of the association , Mr . Ojemhenka Isaac.
