Police Recruitment Examination Date Announced
The Nigeria Police Force has announced its 5th regular course examination into the Nigerian Police Academy, Wudil.
In a statement issued yesterday by the FCT Police Command spokesperson, Usen Omorodion, the police said the selection into the academy for applicants in Abuja is scheduled to hold on July 8.
According to police, the venue for the 2017 selection exercise in Abuja is Powa International School, Area 11, opposite Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The examination will commence by 7 a.m.
The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has advised Nnamdi Kanu and Pro-Biafra groups to settle down and work on dialogue rather than engaging in activities that could continue to “heat up the polity’’.
The Chairman of PFN, Enugu State Chapter, Rev. Godwin Madu, gave this advice shortly after a special prayer meeting for peace in the country on Wednesday.
It would be recalled that the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, had led his group and other pro-Biafran groups to a non-dialogue and non-consultative means of civil struggle.
The special meeting was organised by the PFN at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Province of Excellence), Enugu.
Madu cautioned the IPOB leader and his group as well as other pro-Biafra organisations to settle down and work on dialogue rather than engaging in activities that could continue to “heat up the polity’’.
According to him, PFN is opposed to the radical approach being used by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in its agitations for the South-East.
“Nigeria is good as a country. Anywhere we feel aggrieved, the matter could be addressed amicably instead of heating up the polity and creating unnecessary tension in the entire country,’’ he said.
The PFN Chairman, however, urged the AREWA youths to quickly sheath their swords and work for peace since violence and crisis cannot benefit anybody.
He told the northern youths that “Nigeria had no particular landlord’’, hence no tribe was empowered by the Nigerian Constitution to issue quit notice to any other ethnic group or people.
University of Lagos, UNILAG said it has invented a new method of diagnosing malaria, following intensive research by its Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology.
Prof. Wellington Oyibo, the Director, Research and Innovation of the institution, made this known on Thursday in Lagos.
Oyibo, a lecturer in the department, said the university’s research on malaria testing without the use of blood was validated in 2016.
He said that by this feat, the institution was fast becoming a clinical trial site for diagnosis in the country.
According to him, the institution has provided a platform and an enabling environment for researchers that have been providing solutions to life’s challenges.
The Professor of Medical Parasitology noted that having worked in the malaria space, he discovered that malaria was a major health challenge in the country.
He added that “one of the major challenges in managing the menace has to do with case management, as there are assumptions that all fevers are malaria.
“This leads to excessive diagnosis and overtreatment.”
He recalled that the policy that malaria test should be done before treatment was approved since 2010, noting however, that “in spite of this policy, people are still not doing tests.
“So, one way by which we can encourage diagnosis is by introducing tests that will not require blood from patients.
“Under the new test formula, medicine retailers will be able to carry out diagnosis before dispensing drugs.
“If we keep selling drugs for a disease that does not exist, it will amount to waste of resources and patients will be suffering.’’
The lecturer said that the research was conducted in collaboration with a group of researchers in Baltimore, U.S., adding that the outcome was to diagnose malaria using urine.
He explained that “the first urine malaria test’’ has been validated.
According to him, the urine malaria test is the first clinical and global trial to be done in the world.
The sacked chairman of the Ukanafun Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Abasiono Udomfu, has been arraigned in court for murder.
Mr. Udomfu, like other chairmen in other parts of the state, was handpicked by the state governor, Udom Emmanuel, to run the affairs of the local government council.
The governor dissolved the Ukanafun local government council few days after the police arrested and detained Mr. Udomfu for the alleged murder of the secretary of the local council, Ime Atakpa.
The police spokesperson in the state, Chukwu Ikechukwu, said Wednesday through a police press bulletin that the sacked council chairman, alongside six other “principal accomplices”, have been arraigned at the Chief Magistrate Court Ukanafun for the murder of Mr. Atakpa.
The police gave the names of the six other suspects as Godknows Udoudo alias Archor Head/Executioner; Godwin Ikpe alias One-Man-Chop; Aniefiok Etukudo alias Barbeach –Archor Head; Saturday Isong alias Saty; Akaninyene Iwok; and Ekere Joseph.
The police said the secretary and his political associate, Akaninyene Aka, were shot dead by hired assassins around 9.30 a.m. on April 16, Easter Sunday, at his poultry farm in his village, Ikot Udo-Obobo, Ukanafun.
The police said the secretary was shot at close range allegedly by Aniefiok Etukudo and that he died on the spot. Mr. Aka, who was one of his guests on that fateful day, was hit by a bullet. He later died in the hospital.
“The secretary was said to have frustrated the intention of the governor of the state to grant amnesty to ice-Land secret cult members in Ukanafun area, which did not go down well with the Transition Chairman and the leadership of ice-Land cult,” the police said.
“Consequently, the chairman allegedly ordered his personal assistant, PA, to organize members of the ice-Land cult to eliminate the secretary, to pave way for the amnesty programme, promising a huge sum of money if the job was successfully executed.
“Preparatory to the assassination, the Chairman’s PA held a meeting with the former youth leader of Ikot –Akpan Nkuk village in Ukanafun LGA, one Sunday Inanki ‘m’ at large and the current youth chairman of the village, one Akaninyene Sunday Iwok to draw out the plan.
“The current youth leader brought in two others namely Godwin Daniel Ikpe ‘m’ alias One-Man-Chop and Akaninyene Jumbo Uko alias Iso Akpafi ‘m’, a notorious killer also at large. After a discussion at Ikpe Annang village in Etim Ekpo LGA of the state sometime in April 2017 Udoudo alias Archor Head/Executioner who resides in Port was also contacted for the assignment.
“On the 15th April, Akaninyene Jumbo Uko alias Iso Akpafi ‘m’, Godwin Daniel Ikpe ‘m’ alias One-Man-Chop and one Aniefiok Eseme Etukudo alias Barbeach Archo Head met in Ikpe Annang Village in Etim Ekpo LGA of the state, where they reviewed the plan and approved it for execution.
“On 16th April 2017 at about 0700hrs, the group led by Akaninyene Jumbo Uko ‘alias Iso Akpafi ‘m’ assembled at a hideout in Ikot Udo-Obobo. Two of the members, Englishman presently at large and Saturday Etim Isong ‘m’ alias Saty who had earlier used motorcycles to spy on the secretary, were again sent to confirm his presence at his poultry farm. This they did and immediately returned to kill the secretary,” the police said.
The widows of four of nine men executed by Nigeria’s military regime in 1995 have filed a civil lawsuit seeking compensation and an apology from Royal Dutch Shell.
The widows are Esther Kiobel, Victoria Bera, Blessing Eawo and Charity Levula.
According to a writ filed in a court in The Hague, the widows are seeking compensation from the company for alleged complicity in a military crackdown, leading to the deaths of their husbands.
The Nigerian military cracked down heavily on local opposition to oil production by a Shell joint venture in the Niger Delta region in the early 1990s.
The suit filed by the four widows alleged that Shell provided support to the military in the crackdown that ultimately led to the executions of the men, known as the Ogoni 9.
But Shell, the largest oil producer in Nigeria, has repeatedly denied any involvement in the executions or the government’s response to the unrest.
I kinda like this speaking out thing! Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has said the Igbo living in the state will not leave Kano which they have called home for decades over the quit notice given by a group of northern youths.
He said this in an interview with reporters at the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress in Abuja, yesterday,
The governor was responding to a question about the controversial ‘Kaduna declaration’ during which a group of northern youths gave the Igbos living in the North up till October 1, 2017 to vacate the region.
Ganduje explained that everybody resident in Kano was an indigene of the state.
According to him, his administration has abolished the indigene/settler dichotomy in running the affairs of the state.
Speaking specifically about the quit notice, he said, “Nobody gave a quit notice in Kano. Even when they heard (about it), they (Igbo) said they were not going anywhere and we too told them that they are not going anywhere.
“So, it is an issue that we in Kano, want to show as an example of national integration. Therefore, in Kano we are speaking with the people and, in fact, we have even abolished the issue of indigenes versus settlers. Everybody in Kano is an indigene of Kano but there are some indigenes of Kano with primordial claim which is a fact.”
