A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday dismissed the suit by Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, challenging the validity of the process of recalling him by his constituents. .
According to Punchng, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, in his judgment, ordered that the Independent National Electoral Commission “shall proceed with the recall process”. .
The judgment effectively terminated the earlier ex parte order made by another judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja, Justice John Tsoho, on July 6, 2017, directing parties to maintain status quo. .
But the Justice Dimgba, to whom the case was reassigned, ordered that the process shall only proceed with the recall process, subject to the service of the petition, the full list and signatures of persons in support of the recall process.

S. Africa police claim Nigerian man choked to death after swallowing drugs

Days after aggrieved Nigerians claimed one Kingsley Ikeri was tortured and suffocated to death by the police who were conducting a drug raid on August 30, 2017, the police have come out to say he actually choked to death. .
.
According to Emeka Okoye, a friend of Mr Ikeri’s, who was arrested with him on the same day, the police took Mr Okoye to his house, they put a plastic over his face and handcuffed his legs and hands for over an hour and thirty minutes. .
.
Recalling the story to news channel, Channels Television, Mr Okoye said that he had never experienced anything like the ordeal before and that he nearly died. “Even now, if I cough, I cough out blood,” said Mr Okoye. .
.
Mr Okoye said that the police then took him to the cells and took Ikeri away for, what he believes, was the same torture. The inquest investigation at the Ulundi police station, however, tells a completely different story. .
.
According to the police report, Mr Kingsley is said to have died on Saturday, August 26, after choking on what is believed to be a small packet of drugs that he attempted to quickly swallow when police arrived at his house. .
.
Emeka Okoye was arrested for the possession of drugs and detained. Upon being questioned, Mr Okoye is said to have given the police information regarding another drug dealer residing in East Street. .
.
Mr Okoye is said to have pointed out the house of the other said drug dealer. After taking Mr Okoye to the cells, the police proceeded to the said house with the intentions to search for drugs and make possible arrests. .
.
They found the man believed to be Kingsley Ikeri who proceeded to swallow an unknown packet, downing it with a beer as they approached him. The man is said to have started choking and members of the police took him to Vryheid Hospital where he was later declared deceased. .
.
An inquest has been opened following the death of Kingsley Ikeri and samples have been taken for a toxicology report. The SAPS are hoping that the results will prove what really happened.

The Police Command in Ebonyi on Monday confirmed the arrest of a 30-year-old man suspected to have killed his two-year-old daughter in his farm.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Loveth Odah, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki that the corpse of the girl had been taken to Mgbo Hospital morgue.

Shutdown Looms In Zamfara As NLC Commences Strike Today

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Zamfara Chapter, has said the union would embark on a total strike today following the expiration of a three-week ultimatum given to the state government by the association

The Chairman NLC, Zamfara Chapter, Bashir Mafara, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Gusau.

Recall that the NLC had given the state government three weeks ultimatum to address the problems of workers in the state.

Some of the workers grievances with the state government include the non-implementation of workers annual increments, promotion and the non-payment of 1, 400 newly recruited staff recruited more than three years ago.

Other issues according to the NLC, is that refusal of the government to implement minimum wage for local government staff and primary school teachers as well as non- payment of pensioners’ gratuities.

The NLC said it was worrisome that primary school teachers and local government workers in Zamfara state were still receiving between N7,500 and N8,000 as monthly salary.

The NLC chairman said that the union has been having consultations with the government officials, led by the Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Shinkafi, on how to resolve the issues.

He said that the government had failed to meet up with any of the agreement reached between the workers and the state government.

“Therefore, we are starting the strike tomorrow (today) as announced three weeks ago.

“We have already announced that all the representatives of the NLC affiliated unions should meet tomorrow at NLC Secretariat by 10.00 am to mark the commencement of the strike”, he said.

Mr. Mafara, therefore, urged all workers to stay away from their places of works from tomorrow until the problems were addressed by the government.  //
