Lai Mohammed Emerges VP Of World Tourism Body

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) on Wednesday elected Nigeria as Vice President, Africa at its ongoing 22nd General Assembly in Chengdu, Sichuan Province of Southwest China.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, who led Nigeria’s delegation to the General Assembly assumed the seat on behalf of the country, for the next two years.

NAN reports that Cape Verde was also elected alongside Nigeria as Vice President, Africa, of the global body charged with the responsibility of ensuring sustainable tourism development.
Flood Displaces 452 In Bauchi State.
No fewer than 452 persons have been displaced in Yama village of Shira Local Government Area of Bauchi State as a result of flood disaster. The state’s Information Officer of the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Rufai Yami, disclosed this while giving an update on the disaster.

He said apart from displaced persons, farmlands and property were also destroyed, adding that “at the initial stage, some of the affected victims, who took refuge in some primary schools in the local government, later went to their relatives while others went back to their houses.”

Reacting to the development, Permanent Secretary, SEMA, Shehu Abu Ningi, said the state government had purchased food and non-food items worth N11 million and distributed it to the affected victims. He attributed the flood to indiscriminate disposal of refuse on waterways, which caused the blockage of the drainage.

“As we all know, water must always have its way, so we advise people to avoid erecting buildings on waterways,” he noted.

Over 500 Dead As Congo Cholera Epidemic Spreads

More than 500 people have died so far in a cholera epidemic that is sweeping the Democratic Republic of Congo, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

Outbreaks of the water-borne disease occur regularly in Congo, mainly due to poor sanitation and a lack of access to clean drinking water.

But this year’s epidemic, which has already hit at least 10 urban areas including the capital Kinshasa, is particularly worrying as it comes as about 1.4 million people have been displaced by violence in the central Kasai region.

The WHO said at least 528 people had died and the epidemic had spread to 20 of Congo’s 26 provinces.

“The risk of spread remains very high toward the Grand Kasai region, where degraded sanitary and security conditions further increase vulnerability in the face of the epidemic,” the WHO said in a statement.

EFCC Discovers Patience Jonathan’s N6bn Abuja Plaza

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has discovered an uncompleted eight-storey building in a prime area of Abuja allegedly belonging to Patience Jonathan, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The building, which has been described by the EFCC as a ‘magnificent architectural edifice,’ has not yet been valued by the commission.

However, comparative analysis of similar buildings on several trading sites such as OLX.com and Jiji.ng, within the same area put the worth of the building at N6bn.

A Punch correspondent, who visited the building, which is located within the Central Business District, is between the National Mosque and the Federal Secretariat.

It was alleged in documents sighted by a Punch correspondent that Patience allegedly acquired the property through her foundation known as Aribawa Aurera Reach Out Foundation.

In a document, which has been attached to a court application, the anti-graft agency said it had written to the Corporate Affairs Commission to get the identities of the directors of the foundation who are believed to be fronts for Patience.

The commission further stated that it had written to the Abuja Geographical Information System to get the history of the property and how and when it was bought.

The anti-graft agency has also written eight banks: Skye Bank, Fidelity Bank, First Bank, Union Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank, United Bank for Africa and Unity Bank.

The EFCC had a few months ago frozen an account belonging to Aribawa Aurera Reach Out Foundation with account number 1222014221 in Ecobank with a balance of N479m.

The anti-graft agency said there was no way Patience would have been able to afford such a property as her last known job was Permanent Secretary in Bayelsa State.

The document read, “Plot 1350 Cadastral Zone A00 CBD which was allocated to Ariwabai Aurera Reach Out Foundation in 2010 and Certificate of Occupancy issued in 2011. The plot bears an eight-storey building still under construction.

“Inference may be drawn from investigation that the suspect’s (Patience) last known official position was permanent secretary in Bayelsa State. Hence, there is no way such magnificent architectural edifices could have been built within a short space of time.

“There is a high probability that it could have been built with the proceeds of crime. It is evidently clear that it is a case of money laundering but there is a need to do more investigation.”
