NECO Releases 2017 June/July Results
 THE National Examinations Council on Thursday released the June/July 2017 Senior Secondary Schools Examination results.

The Council says out of the 1,051,472 who sat for the examinations, only 745,053 of the candidates got at least five credits including Mathematics and English Language.

The Registrar of the Council, Prof. Charles Uwakwe, while announcing the results at the headquarters in Minna, Niger State, said a total number of 50,586 candidates (4.81 percent) were involved in examination malpractices, representing a 0.52 percent increment compared to 2016.

Uwakwe said the comparative analysis of candidates’ performance in the examination for 2016 (69.74%) and 2017 (70.85%) shows that there is a 1.11 percent improvement in the general performance of candidates.

According to him, out of the 1,055,988 candidates who registered for the examinations in Nigeria and other countries only 1,051,472 sat and only 745,053 (70.85 percent) got 5 credits and above including Mathematics and English Language.

“We have 50,586 (4.81 percent) candidates involved in examination malpractice and this represents 0.52% increment compared with 2016 that had 43,905 cases (4.29%).

“A total of 276 schools were involved in mass cheating in 34 states and 6 schools have been de-recognised with 23 supervisors blacklisted for aiding malpractice.”
 
 
22 Drown As Boat Capsizes In India This Morning
 At least 22 people drowned after their over-loaded boat capsized in Yamuna river in Baghpat district, India today, the police said. The boat carrying 60 people capsized and 22 persons drowned, District Magistrate Bhawani Singh said

After the incident, the villagers resort to violence on Delhi-Saharanpur highway. The boat sank close to Katha village, 20 km from the district headquarters.

"The boat was ferrying passengers more than its capacity. Most of the passengers of the ill-fated boat were women. As soon as the boat reached mid-stream it capsized," the district magistrate said.

Rescue teams, including a team of NDRF, have reached the spot, a senior police officer said.

Saudi Arabian Court Jails Sokoto Pilgrim 3 Months For Claiming Ownership Of Found Purse

A Sharia Court in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, has sentenced a pilgrim from Goronyo Local Government in Sokoto State, Alhaji Mamman Lugga Kwakwazo, to three months in prison for claiming a purse he found at the Holy Mosque in Makkah.

The incident, which occurred at the Holy Mosque in Makkah last Friday, was taken to a Sharia Court after the owner of the purse came forward.

However, Alhaji Kwakwazo reportedly refused to give back the purse to the owner, still claiming ownership
.
Eyewitnesses said an argument ensued between them. The matter was then reported to Saudi security agents, who subsequently arrested them and charged the matter to court. Alhaji Kwakwazo was later taken to Sokoto State Pilgrims Hotel to confirm his identity.

 According to the Secretary of the Goronyo Local Government, Alhaji Dalhatu ‘Yar-tsakuwa, who confirmed the incident, “the incident is unfortunate.

 Alhaji Kwakwazo was later found guilty by the court for false claim and sentenced to three months in prison.

Also, he has been barred from entering Saudi Arabia for the next five years.

Boko Haram Commander, Others Surrender To Police

The Police in Borno on Wednesday said a top Boko Haram commander together with other members of the group had surrendered to the command in the state.

DSP Victor Isuku, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), said in a statement issued in Maiduguri that the insurgents unconditionally surrendered to men of the command.

 “The counter terrorism effort of the Nigerian military, code named “Operation Safe Corridor” recorded another victory with the unconditional surrender to the police by high profile repentant Boko Haram terrorists.

On September 10, at about 21: 00 hours, the intelligence arm of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of the command, were able to negotiate a peaceful surrender of repentant Boko Haram terrorists with their families.


“One Ibrahim Dala (alias Abu Ali), formerly of Kawar Mela ward, Maiduguri, an Amir (commander) of the Mamman Nur faction, along with Audu Mustapha Bukar, 20; and Laminu Mustapha Modu, 25.

“They are all residing at Talala insurgents camp in Sambisa Forest, surrendered themselves unconditionally to Borno State Police Command”.

Isuku disclosed that there were five children among members of the families of the repented insurgents, explaining that the children aged between one and eight years.

 He added that the surrendered insurgents had made useful statement that would assist in the counter-insurgency campaign. “Presently, they are undergoing preliminary profiling preparatory to transfer to the military”.

Resident Doctors Suspend Strike
 The National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has suspended its strike. The suspension was announced in the early hours of today after a meeting of the executives the association.

Addressing journalists on the decision to suspend the strike, the Chairman of NARD, UCH, Ibadan chapter, Segun Olaopa, said “the decision was reached following appeals from the public that the doctors should give the federal government more time to meet their demands.”

Mr. Olaopa, however, said that there will be a review in two weeks time to determine how far the government had gone to honour their agreements.  

Retired Soldiers Protest Unpaid Pensions

Military pensioners, on Wednesday, held a peaceful protest at the headquarters of the Ministry of Finance to demand the payment of their pension arrears.

The workers, numbering about 100, accused the ministry of refusing to release funds for the payment of the backlogs of their pensions.

They chanted solidarity songs, while displaying placards with various inscriptions such as ‘Pay us our pension’, and ‘Pension review should be based on 53.7 per cent effective from 2015’.

They called on President Muhammadu Buhari to authorise the payment of the 20.37 per cent balance of military pension increment since 2010, payment of balance of gratuities of contributory pensions with the National Pension Commission and the harmonisation of military pensions transparently and equitably.


Other demands are that government should audit and re-organise the Military Pension Board to make it transparent and friendly to veterans, payment of military pensions to verified civil war veterans, and engagement of military veterans in the protection of critical infrastructure.

They also demanded the payment of next-of-kin of fallen heroes equitable insurance benefits, and payment of balance of pension arrears of deceased veterans to Next-of Kin among others.
