Yesterday, it was announced that the ninth installment in The Fast And The Furious franchise would be released on April 10th, 2020, a year-long delay from it’s original release date. The series boasts a star-studded cast of Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and more, with Statham and Johnson rumored to star in an eventual spin-off. The problem is, the spin-off has been speculated for a 2019 release, and the Fast 9 delay has left cast member Tyrese Gibson feeling some type of way. In fact, Tyrese has gone and attributed the bulk of the blame to his co-star, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
In an Instagram post, which Tyrese vows will not be deleted, Gibson airs out The Rock over his perceived role in pushing the Fast 9 release date back. The post’s lengthy caption kicks off with a passive aggressive “congratulations,” continuing as follows:
“#PSA Congratulations to @TheRock and your brother in law aka 7 bucks producing partner @hhgarcia41 for making the fast and the furious franchise about YOU – And like you, DJ even if they call I will not be deleting this post – Gn folks see you in 2020 April #FastFamily right? Nah….. it’s about #TeamDewayne#3yrs will it be worth the wait? #NoShaw just Hobbs will this be another #BayWatch? Guys guys just relax I’m just a passionate film critic”
While this is hardly the first time Tyrese has fired shots at his co-star, it seems as if some serious behind-the-scenes drama is brewing. If the rumors are true, and The Rock’s spinoff series is to blame for the delay, does Tyrese have a point? There’s no denying that The Rock is one of the industry’s hardest working actors, and it’s no surprise that his presence is in high demand. Hell, the man has even teased a potential presidential campaign. Still, it’s sad to see the Fast Family going through some internal beef, especially one so public.
Either way, congrats to The Rock for continuing to secure that bag.
