The father of Aloysius Nnamdi Ikegwuonu a.k.a Bishop, the main target of the Ozubulu Church massacre that took place in August 2017, has now been buried.
Late Chief Cyprian Otuadimma Ikegwuonu (Ichie Akunwafor) was buried on Friday January 12th in a special cenotaph dedicated for the victims of August 6th, 2017 church attack beside St Philip’s Catholic Church, Amakwa Ozubulu in Anambra state.
Recall that on that Sunday attack, gunmen stormed the St Philip’s Catholic Church during mass at about 6am, opened fire killing about 18 worshipers and injuring several others. Investigations carried out by the police indicated that the target in the attack was Bishop. It was alleged that the attack was as a result of a drug deal that went sour between Bishop and another Nigerian based in South Africa.
The sad incident attracted strong condemnation from Nigerians and groups. President Muhammadu Buhari, the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State; the All Progressives Congress; the Peoples Democratic Party; and the South-East Governors’ Forum said the act was sacrilegious, calling for prompt action to bring the culprits to book.
The Catholic Diocese of Nnewi suggested that those that were killed should be buried in the piece of land adjacent to the church. The funeral was presided over by two Bishops, scores of Catholic Priests, 7 Anglican Clergies, top government officials, several Igwes and residents of the state.
President Muhammadu Buhari then in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President described the incident as “an appalling crime against humanity and unspeakable sacrilege.
“This kind of atrocity plumbs the depth of depravity and extreme cruelty of the kind that words cannot adequately express.”
According to the President, there is no religion that does not lay constant emphasis on the sanctity of life, adding that “all Nigerians must rise up and speak with one voice against these remorseless evil men.”
