Yesterday afternoon a fire broke out at the Olusosun dumpsite in Ojota area of Lagos state, and according to Sahara Reporters, eyewitnesses said about four trucks and stores have been consumed.
The Lagos state government, through its Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI) of the ministry of environment, has debunked allegations that the fire was deliberately set by the government, saying “it broke out as a result of the pockets of unstable gases caused by indiscriminate dumping and further compounded by dry weather,” in a statement on Twitter.
Following the incident, Cleaner Lagos also announced that “3 Engineered Landfills in Epe and Ikorodu have been concessioned for construction and maintenance.” The first will be fully operational by early 2019 although it is already being used as a viable alternative to these dumpsites, the statement added.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has said that its officials are on ground combating the fire.
