Man Impersonates Lagos Deputy Governor, Defrauds Victim Of N1m

A middle-aged man, Adamu Aminu was on Friday arraigned before an Ebute-Metta Magistrate Court for fraudulently collecting N1million from an unsuspecting victim for a bogus orphanage falsely claimed to be owned by Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule.

Aminu (45), who was arraigned by the Lagos State Government on a four-count charge before Chief Magistrate Oluyemisi Adelaja, was said to have perpetrated the crime sometime in August in Agege area of the State.

In count one, the defendant (Aminu) allegedly conspired with others now at large to commit felony to wit obtaining money by false pretence, an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law Cap C17, Vol 3, Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

In count two, the defendant and others at large “Sometime in August 2017, at 1015 hours at Agege, Lagos State in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did fraudulently obtain the sum of One Million Naira only from one Bright Obed (M) on the pretence of soliciting for funds for a bogus orphanage which you falsely held out to be set up by the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Her Excellency, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 311 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law Cap C17, Vol 3, Laws of Lagos State, 2015.”

In counts three and four, the defendant alongside others now at large, were accused of conspiring to impersonate a public officer and unlawfully postured as the Lagos State Deputy Governor by calling and sending SMS on a mobile number 09064583091 to the public as the said Deputy Governor contrary to and punishable under Sections 380 and 411 of the Criminal Law Cap C17, Vol 3, Laws of Lagos State, 2015. After the charges were read to the defendant, he pleaded not guilty while his lawyer, Mrs Uzuomaka Nwafor applied for bail on liberal terms.

Nwafor hinged the bail application on the ground that the crime which the defendant was charged with, is bailable and that he (Aminu) was presumed innocent until otherwise proven. Responding, the prosecutor, Mr Rafiu Aroyehun, an Assistant Director with the State’s Ministry of Justice, urged the Court to refuse the bail application on the ground that the offence which the defendant allegedly committed was a serious crime.

He said investigation into the crime was still ongoing, with police in the process of tracking down other suspects, but that the defendant was hurriedly charged to court in view of the provision of the Constitution as to number of days to detain him in custody.

“Though the offence is bailable but its seriousness is basically the reason for contesting the bail. The defendant ought to have been arraigned with others who are still at large and the investigation to arrest those on the run is ongoing,” Aroyehun said.

In her ruling, Magistrate Adelaje granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N300, 000 and two sureties in like sum. One of the sureties, according to the Court, must be resident within the defendant’s neighbourhood, while the other surety must show proof of employment with a reputable organisation. The surety must also be resident within court’s jurisdiction, while both sureties must provide evidence of tax clearance.

Also, the details of the sureties must be verified by the prosecution, while the defendant is to remain in custody pending the perfection of his bail conditions. The matter was subsequently adjourned to October 16, 2017.

We Warned Buhari Not To Appoint Alhassan - El-Rufai
Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State says President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Aisha Alhassan as a minister despite complaints by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress.
El-Rufai lambasted the Minister of Women Affairs for being disloyal to the President, adding that she was never a Buhari supporter but a loyalist of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
The governor said this while speaking with State House Correspondents at the Villa on Friday. El-Rufai said Alhassan did not also vote for Buhari during the APC presidential primary.
He advised Nigerians not to be surprised or shocked at her outburst. He, however, said her retention or otherwise as a cabinet minister should be at the discretion of the President.

EFCC Arrests Own Driver, Policeman For ‘Burgling’ Badeh’s Sealed Mansion

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has arrested one of its drivers, Nasiru Isa, for allegedly burgling a sealed house owned by Alex Badeh, former chief of defence staff.

In January 2016, the EFCC sealed off some pieces of property in Abuja owned by the former defence chief, who is facing trial for allegedly diverting funds meant for the military.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC spokesman, said Isa was part of a robbery syndicate which specialised in breaking into property sealed off by the anti-graft agency.

He said a policeman, Aliyu Ismaila, is also a member of the gang. According to him, other members of the gang are Abubakar Jibrin, Abdulsalam Ado, Ibrahim Babangida, Reuben Dauda, Hassan Aliyu, Sani Yusuf and Murtala Mohammed.

Uwujaren said the suspects were caught in the act of breaking into Badeh’s property.

“On August 30, 2016, operatives of the EFCC, as part of monitoring activities on the sealed property, had gone to the site to execute a search,” he said.

“However, members of the syndicate took to their heels on sighting the operatives of the anti-graft agency. A carpenter, Yakubu Muhammad, who was hired by the syndicate, was left behind and was subsequently arrested by the operatives.

“The carpenter, who has been cooperating with operatives, confessed that he was not in the know of the illicit activity, as he was only brought in by the syndicate to assist with the use of his carpentry tools to break into the property.”

The EFCC spokesman said investigations showed that some people moved about 12 bags believed to contain items linked to money laundering into the property after it was sealed off.

“Investigations revealed that one of those in the know about the goods was the brains behind the scheming to steal them. The syndicate decided they would need to subdue the security man at the property, which would mean they would need to involve security personnel in the syndicate,” he said.

“Subsequently, Isa was contacted. To further beef up the security aspect of the crime, he also contacted his friend, Ismaila, who came for the ‘operation’ fully armed. In perpetrating the crime, Dauda had posed to be a senior official of the EFCC, while Jibrin posed as an Intelligence police officer in the inspector-general’s office.

“However, on August 30, 2016, they were caught in the act of breaking into the property, having successfully overpowered the security guard at the entrance of the property.”

A similar incident had happened in one of the Abuja residences of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

In July, policemen guarding the property burgled it, stripping it bare.

The suspects were later dismissed from the force, and are currently facing burglary charges.

APC Reacts To Buhari’s Minister’s Support For Atiku

The Deputy National Chairman of the APC, Segun Oni, has provided what appears a first formal reaction of the party to the stance of a serving minister declaring support for another presidential candidate in 2019.

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Alhassan, shocked many Nigerians when a video surfaced on Tuesday showing the minister declaring support for a former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, for the 2019 presidential election.

In his reaction, Mr. Oni expressed shock over the decision.

The News Agency of Nigeria quoted Mr. Oni as speaking at the Makurdi airport in Benue State, “I am surprised that it happened in the first instance, but that is for the President and the party to talk about it at the appropriate time,” he said.

When Premium Times sought the reaction of the official APC spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, he said, “We have no comment at this time.”

Mrs Alhassan, who also said President Buhari had said he would not contest in 2019, was at the presidential villa on Thursday, where she told journalists that she stood by her statements. //
